Dairy Farmer of the Year Award
A dairy herd run with skill and care.
About this category
This award recognises a dairy farmer or herd manager whose herd health, milk quality and business results stand out. Judges look for cow welfare, efficiency and a system that suits the farm.
Eligibility
Open to UK dairy farmers and dairy herd managers.
Judging criteria
- Cow health and welfare
- Milk quality
- Efficiency
- Business results
- Environmental management
Qualitative criteria
Contented cows and a well run parlour.
Metrics
- Yield per cow
- Milk constituents
- Somatic cell count
- Fertility
- Lameness
- Margin over feed
Additional criteria
Entries should include a short account of the farm or business, supporting figures such as yields, herd or flock performance, costs or margins where relevant, and, where possible, comments from customers, buyers, advisers or neighbours. Figures can be given as ranges or percentages and nothing in an entry is shared beyond the judging panel. Judges consider the size, type and location of the farm, so a small upland holding competes on equal terms with a large lowland estate.
