New Entrant to Farming Award
Starting from scratch, and making it work.
About this category
This award recognises someone from any background who has started or taken on a farming business within the last five years, through a tenancy, share farming, a starter farm or a new enterprise. Judges look for the courage of the start and the progress since.
Eligibility
Open to people who started or took on a UK farming business within the last five years.
Judging criteria
- Progress since starting
- Business planning
- Skills gained
- Resilience
- Ambition
Qualitative criteria
Determination to make a living from the land.
Metrics
- Output
- Stock or land farmed
- Turnover growth
- Investment and qualifications
Additional criteria
Entries should include a short account of the farm or business, supporting figures such as yields, herd or flock performance, costs or margins where relevant, and, where possible, comments from customers, buyers, advisers or neighbours. Figures can be given as ranges or percentages and nothing in an entry is shared beyond the judging panel. Judges consider the size, type and location of the farm, so a small upland holding competes on equal terms with a large lowland estate.
