Farm Worker of the Year Award
The skilled hands every farm depends on.
About this category
This award recognises an employed farm worker, stockperson, herdsperson, shepherd or machinery operator whose skill, reliability and commitment stand out. Judges look for the difference the person makes and what the farm would miss without them.
Eligibility
Open to people employed on UK farms in any practical role. Entries are usually made by an employer or colleague.
Judging criteria
- Skill
- Reliability
- Care for animals
- Crops and machinery
- Safety
- Contribution to the farm
Qualitative criteria
Quiet skill and total dependability.
Metrics
- Responsibilities held
- Results in their area of work
- Safety record and employer feedback
Additional criteria
Entries should include a short account of the farm or business, supporting figures such as yields, herd or flock performance, costs or margins where relevant, and, where possible, comments from customers, buyers, advisers or neighbours. Figures can be given as ranges or percentages and nothing in an entry is shared beyond the judging panel. Judges consider the size, type and location of the farm, so a small upland holding competes on equal terms with a large lowland estate.
